Interaction study of acoustic waves with damage: applications to NDT of laminated composites [2022-2024]

Detection and evaluation of damage in materials are major concerns for industries, for quality control during the inspection of structures in service and during maintenance operations. Acoustic methods (ultrasound, acoustic emission) have been widely used in recent years for the inspection of metal and composite structures. Among ultrasonic inspection techniques, guided waves have the advantage of propagating over long distances and large inspection area, unlike conventional stepping inspection techniques. Also, subsurface waves (longitudinal waves refracted at the 1st critical angle) have been of great and wide interest in surface and subsurface inspection because of their properties. Indeed, the penetration depth of these waves is modulated according to the control conditions (frequency and transmitter-receiver distance).     This research project aims to establish a digital and experimental strategy for integrated health monitoring (structure monitoring also called Monitoring SHM), based on the propagation of ultrasonic guided waves (Lamb waves) and subsurface waves (Lcr) , making it possible to detect, locate and quantify delamination-type damage in laminated composites. The 1st part of this project will be devoted to studying the feasibility of detecting defects calibrated in size and depth (voluntarily introduced by inserting a Teflon pellet to simulate delamination). Then the second part consists of real-time monitoring of the propagation of damage in the laminated plates under mechanical (traction) and dynamic (impact, DCB) loading.
