Development of polyamide-based polymer composite materials for the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) process [2022-2024]

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) of thermoplastic polymer powders is now a widespread additive manufacturing technique. It is found in a variety of applications from aerospace to automotive, consumer products to dental and medical materials. The SLS process of thermoplastic polymer powders allows to obtain parts or products with good mechanical properties. However, above all, it allows the production of complex shapes, high value-added that cannot be produced by conventional plastic processes. Among the thermoplastic polymers used for the SLS process, polyamide (PA) comes first, because it offers very interesting characteristics for the realization of final objects or functional prototypes. This material is opaque and rigid; it is perfectly adapted to the manufacture of parts requiring complex and precise shapes and benefits from a good resistance to handling and temperature. The research activity of this project is mainly focused on the development of new and less expensive composite materials used in the SLS process for the fabrication of devices for applications such as sensors or electrodes for the degradation of organic pollutants, and the removal of heavy metals in the environmental field. These new composite materials must have good conductivity, outstanding thermal and mechanical properties. To do this, our attention is focused on the development of powders based on polyamide (PA11 and PA12) reinforced by conductive polymer type charges and their composites. For that, our research will be articulated on the following points: - Proposal of a protocol for the elaboration of composite powders based on polyamides (PA11 and PA12); - Improvement of the properties of polyamide-based composite powders; - Control of the SLS process parameters on the new elaborated materials (preheating temperature, laser power, scanning speed, beam radius, thickness of the spread layer).
