Control and Optimization Techniques Applied to Welding Sequences. [2019-2021]

The design, realization and implementation of manufacturing and assembly processes, both high quality and economical, to meet the requirements of new technological applications increasingly demanding in industry such as automotive industry, steel, naval industry, petroleum industry will confer an assured competitiveness in a rather tough competitive context. To do this, it is necessary to master the manufacturing and assembly processes and to develop effective means of control quality produced taking into account the different variables related to material innovations and imposed design.

Automated welding constitutes a global technology in a complete production system: All the components of the equipment are designed to ensure very high quality welded assemblies, precise and perfectly reproducible, all in an economical way, and reducing as much as possible operating times.

It is proposed, in this research project, to develop a reliable tool for controlling welding processes (arc welding, laser welding process, electron beam welding, etc.) based on the diversity of materials to be assembled, whatever made of steel or light elements such as aluminum and its alloys. Therefore, it is necessary to guarantee a high level of robustness during mechanically welded constructions in series by producing assemblies identical to the reference models. This requires the design and implementation of automated installations containing several management and control systems such as real-time signal acquisition and processing systems, digital control / command systems, communicating systems, ...

This type of automated welding installation may contain the following elements:

  • An on-board control panel with industrial PC.
  • Sensors.
  • An integrated joint search system.
  • A route measurer.
  • Motorized arms for positioning the welding head.
